Prof. N.G. Karanth is a chemical engineer specialized in the area of
biochemical engineering and biotechnology.
He has a B.Tech in chemical engineering
from I.I.T. Madras (1967), M.E. from I.I.Sc., and Ph.D from University
of Salford, U.K. After a Post-Doctoral stint
at University of Houston, Texas, USA, he returned to India in 1975 to join the
Chemical Engineering Division at National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, to head the biochemical engineering activities.
In 1984 he moved to Central Food Technological Research Institute,
Dr. Karanth has over 100 publications in reputed international journals,
25 patents to his credit and served on the Editorial Boards of several International
Biotechnology and Food Technology journals.
He has been the recipient of All India Biotech Association (AIBA) Award
(1999-2000) for contributions to Indian Biotechnology Research and Development.
He served as a Professor at I.I.T. Madras for one year. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy
of Engineering (FNAE). His research interests
include Biochemical Engineering, enzyme processes, kinetics and mathematical
modelling, solid state and submerged fermentation, biosensor development, novel
bioactive molecules by fermentation, and biofuels. Currently he is the Director, Food
and Biotechnology Consultants ( FOBICS) , Mysore. He is also an advisor to M/S
Murhopye Industry, Mysore.
